I am interested in the relationship between photographs and memory. Embedded in my work is the practical, ritual act of making images and objects: collecting, tracing, sorting, layering and organizing. The making of images, whether photographic or painted, creates a surface — an illusion — that then needs to be disrupted in order to acknowledge its own materiality and construction. For me, it becomes important to draw attention to the role of the material as it attempts to image the intangible past, both in its compliance in rendering an accurate picture and its failure in allowing me to do so. I'm interested, particularly in these pieces, in the ways in which memory lives in our bodies and works on us in physical ways.
