Heidi Nagtegaal has been "headbanding" and "braceleting" people since 2004. To date, over 2000 bracelets and 3000 headbands have been made, and gifted. Heidi Nagtegaal lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

"The mandate is simple, I make them and give them out at parties, events, weddings, art openings, music shows (etc). Everyone must have the opportunity to have one (but they don't need to take one); and they can wear, decorate, collect, throw away or cherish their object however they please. In response, people have worn their headbands and/or bracelets for years, changed their wardrobe style, made shrines, gotten a large chest tattoo with their headband in it, and—in certain instances—started headbanding them out on their own.

What started off as a simple project now has a life entirely unto its own. I am now "the girl that gives out the headbands;" at parties I get heckled "Where're the Headbands?"; and I have recently been shown a tattoo of a headband incorporated into a large tattoo, on the chest of a man I did not know (at the time, now I know him).

Hearsay is a key force, turning ordinary pieces of string, crocheted into something by me, into a thing of legend. When people go to other people's houses and see their headband wrapped around their doorknob (for example), they say "That's a Red One, I was there," or "That's a White One, were you at the 536 RIP Party too?" In this way, the project lives beyond its original performative gesture into a tribute of sorts, collecting hearsay of its own, documenting a moment in space and time."
