This music was originally put together on acoustic guitar at a time when I was thinking about the future of my unborn, second child. The time was filled with stress and uncertainty and some gentle guitar playing proved to be somewhat therapeutic.

My wife and I were given the news that our child to be had a five percent chance of being born with Down syndrome. We were presented with the choice of amniocentesis (which would give us a more definitive answer) and/or abortion.

Despite what our beliefs on these matters were prior to this point in time, all the different options wriggled their way in and played out in our minds. This caused horrible feelings of guilt. I am someone who generally lives in “the now” as opposed to obsessing about future possibilities, but these choices made the future seem to be coming head on and having its way with me.

In the end, we approached the birth date without knowing anymore than when we were first given the news. Our son was born with Down syndrome and today is such a joy that reflecting on this time makes me think how alien those thoughts and feelings are to my life now.

Even though this music is a little louder and a tad more herky-jerky than when it was originally written, it still reminds me of this time and of my son.

On this recording is Shaun Thompson on drums and Kurt Wilkinson on electric bass. Keyboard noises were added later. Thanks for listening.
